Bad News!

Unfortunately, two days ago my beloved laptop of four years Victoria shut down whilst I was in the middle of an illustration. I am so annoyed because I have a load of new ideas for quick pieces based on Comic Con and Q-Con. It was the seven beeps of death: basically the sound of death for Dell laptops. Thankfully, I was able to get her working again last night and back up all of my branding, illustrations and fonts. I hope she holds out for another while, but until she beeps her last, I shall be seeking a replacement and will hopefully be back in the drawing business soon!

Evil Dead Chainsaw Hand!

Alright you primitive screwheads, listen up: Last weekend, Comic Con finally came to Belfast! I cosplayed as the groovy Ash Williams from the Evil Dead Trilogy. Now no Ash costume is complete without his chainsaw hand, so I got to work. Now, I am going to bestow this knowledge upon you! If this helps you in any way, please please, please CREDIT ME!

You will need:

-1 flour sifter

-2 A2 sheets of foamboard

-1 Coca Cola box that holds 10 tins

-1 small circular tupperware case with lid

-1 large rectangular tupperware case with handle

-1 2litre milk carton with 2 lids

-1 pull chord from a lanyard

-1 dowel rod

-1 length of foam tubing

-2 different strengths of silver cloth tape

-red, silver and black spraypaint

-at least one week of free time!

~Dismantle the flour sifter, keeping the handle and inner blades, discarding the mesh on the base. (Fig.1)

~Place the inner blades inside the circular tupperware, then glue the tupperware lid upside down onto the          base, holding the blades in place. Cut a circular piece of foamboard and stick it to the base.

~Cut the milk carton in half vertically, removing the handles (Fig.2)

~Reinforce the Coca Cola box with foamboard on the top and sides, then place the two halves of the milk       carton on each side, cutting a circular hole on the left half and pushing the circular tupperware case through. ~You should now have (Fig.3)

~Cut out the basic shape of a chainsaw blade, the more irregular and uneven, the better. Spray it silver and     spatter red ink all over it (Fig. 4) Leave it to dry.

~Curve a small piece of cardboard around the base, then spraypaint one lid black, the other red. Place the     flour sifter's handle on top where you'd like it.(Fig.5)

~ Cut a slot that is just big enough to slot the blade through (Fig.6)

~Stick the lanyard pull chord on the inside of the left milk carton, then slot the handle through to the outside.

~Cut the large tupperware case as seen in (Fig.7) also cutting a circular hole, then tape the flour sifter to it.

~(Fig.8) shows how it will all look together. Place the dowel rod where your hand will be when reaching         through the flour sifter. Cut a length of foam tubing and put it over the dowel rod.

~ Now simply wrap the strongest tape all around it, then the smoother tape all over as a second layer. Spray    it red, tape the lids and handles to it and you're done!

OK here he is, finally finished! That flipping mask and those guns took forever! As always, I'm putting my own spin on their design, so this is comic Starlord wearing movie Starlord's mask and coat over his classic blue costume. I enjoyed working on this one, as the details were even more challenging than Rocket's gun!

Another Thank You Card!

There are now two of these hand made cards in existence! I'm happy, because it allows me to practice my hand made, craft and paper skills. It's been a relatively long time!

Gravity Falls 'Journal 3' Replica

It's finally done! My 'Journal 3' replica from Gravity Falls! It is simply an a4 sketchbook, backed with crimson paper, with gold paper used for the accents and hand. Gray paper was slotted in for the ripped away sections. The magnifying glass was simply a lucky find, attached with a piece of white chord. A few yellowed pages were cut and stuck in haphazardly to replicate the look in the series.


This is for my upcoming Dipper Pines cosplay. I had done the costume last year, but this prop is a way of upping the ante. Maybe I'll be brave enough to upload a fully costumed picture with it in the future!

Handmade Thank You card

I was feeling crafty, and needed to make a thank you card. Instead of just designing one and getting it printed, I thought I would try my hand at making one by hand. It's nothing too fancy, just some patterned card and paper I bought from the Papermill shop a little while ago. For being my first attempt, I am quite happy with how it turned out.

S.H.I.E.L.D Avengers Initiative Document

This was a part of my final submission in final year at university. I wanted to create a document based on the Avengers film from Marvel. I wanted the document to be designed to look like a secret agency's file, observing the six main characters, providing notes on each of their strengths, weaknesses and how suitable they are for recruitment by S.H.I.E.L.D. Each page was printed and cut, with each document's label sticking out in a cascading pattern like a filing system. Attached to each document with a paper-clip was a small, candid photograph of each character, adding to the authentic feel.

Overall, I am happy with how the project turned out, as it helped me to work with image, text, different paper types and different styles of publication. It also helped me creatively, by writing each piece 'in character' as someone observing each character and making notes on them.

Rocket Raccoon

I love the smell of napalm in the morning! The recent Guardians of the Galaxy trailer pushed me to finally finish Rocket Raccoon! I can't wait for this film and I am willing to bet that this little badass will be a household name because of it! This is the first in a series of five. I hope you like it!

Miss Aperture Science

My entry into the WeLoveFine.com Portal design competition. The design is based on the 'Girls of Aperture Science' calendars seen scattered throughout the Portal games. I wanted the design to be simple, yet fun and recognisable. I hope you like it and I hope even more that I win!

What's that? Oh just Katsuhiro Harada: CREATOR OF TEKKEN retweeting my Combot illustration! Today is a good day!

Combot

The Vitruvian Combot! This was an idea that acted as an evolution of the wireframe blueprint of Prototype Jack. I was inspired to use Combot as the 'frame' for a fighter, so showed his layout and how he moved. I experimented with the blending and opacity to make the illustration look like it was done using a pen and pencil on old, aged paper. I was very happy with the result!

Lili De Rochefort

"Combien de temps pouvez-vous supporter mes attaques?" Miss Emelie De Rochefort, looking pretty, dangerous and pretty dangerous! I wanted to make this one a tad more stylized, playing with gradient toold and different shading techniques. I also wanted to keep the style relatively simple. I included a scribbled Eiffel Tower in the background as a subtle hint towards her French heritage.

Unknown

Next day posting! Aww yeah! The beautiful but deadly Unknown: Jun Kazama's darker side! I wanted to use a more loose, painted style to represent her weird gooey powers, so I used some watercolour brushes, but used standard vectors for her actual body and features. Once again, I am glad at the results and am getting faster at completing my drawings! What used to take nearly a month is now down to a few days!

Mokujin

The Wooden Master of Mimicry himself: Mokujin! This guy was one of my favourites all the way back since Tekken 3. His quirky, yet simplistic design, coupled with his ability to entertain without words just always seemed to click with me. For this character, I added simple log shapes and altered the gradient effect on each. I then started attempting to add more detail and texture to the wood and metal that make the character up. However, I found that I liked the simplistic, almost 'children's storybook' style that I had created. Because of this, I kept it simple, added some more details like the concentric rings on the ends of the logs and the quick 'foresty' background. This was also my fastest entry in Project: Tekken so far. Yet also the one I have rambled on about the most. Go figure.

Less than three hours until I turn 23. What better way to celebrate than The Birthday Sloth?

Alien VS Predator

Let's get reeeaadddyy to ruummmbblllee! This illustration was just a random idea I had and thought it would make for a funny piece. This was my first piece that was done freehand, using the brush tool first, then adding the colour afterwards. Overall, I am happy with how I was able to simplify the Alien and Predator designs to keep them recognisable, but not as detailed as their live action counterparts.

Mordecai and the Rigbys

Once again, just another random idea that, once I get it in my head, I have to see it through. Simply combining one of my favourite new animated series, Regular Show and one of my favourite bands, Daft Punk. Taking inspiration from their latest album cover Random Access Memories, I portrayed the two main characters. I considered having the band name 'Mordecai and the Rigbys' but opted for the title of Regular Show instead..

Miss Hepburn

Today I felt like drawing Audrey Hepburn. You may ask me "Why?" I reply emphatically with a straight: "Why not?"

Ash. Get It?

Sometimes, I get a simple, silly idea and have to see it through. This was one of them. Having only recently watched the original Evil Dead Trilogy and being a long time fan of Pokemon, the two 'Men Called Ash' merged in my odd mind and an illustration idea was born!

Behold: Ponies!

Just a few of the random ideas I came up with after attending Q-Con last month. Yes, I am a brony and decided to showcase it with some fanart. Nothing too mind-blowing, but the KISS idea was one that just sparked from my quite bizarre idea process. Hope you enjoy!

Sergei Dragunov

So this one was inspired by Soviet propaganda, with bold uses of red and yellow. I chose to keep Dragunov as solid shapes of colour with no shading to match that art style. I also experimented with adding a folded paper texture to the background to make it appear to be an old piece of paper.

Kunimitsu

準備をする! Here she is, the legendary kunoichi herself: Kunimitsu! Because of her Japanese heritage, as well as her kunai weapon and history, I wanted to represent her on an ancient scroll, detailing the background with texture to make the piece appear aged and worn. I am happy with the overall turnout, and had a bit of trouble getting the blending layers right!

Angel

The ball is rolling! I decided to represent the beautiful Angel in a stained glass window style. The texture was done on a white layer and placed over the top. This resulted in the image appearing a bit faded and flat, both of which added to the aged style I was aiming for. Overall I am pleased with how she turned out.
