Constructivism Inspired Part 1

These are just 8 of about 150 photos that I took for a project that required us to replicate the constructivist style of photography. My initial attempt was panned by both me and my tutor, so I made myself have a proper shot at it. This time, I took photographs of several utensils. After about an hour, I was tidying them away, when I realised that the container they were in was also quite an interesting shape. These 8 photographs show that container. Quite an improvement, if I do say so myself!

Reuse Website

Back already! In the strangest link ever, I have discovered a somewhat useful website for our group project. I bought a cheap toy bus for taking photographs of for a poster design (see previous post) and was just examining the packaging, which listed this website on the back:

www.junkk.com

This was just there as a generic 'don't throw away this packaging' notice, but it has some interesting ideas. If not for direct inclusion in our exhibition, then at least for preporatory purposes.

Sustainability Poster Concepts

Ok so for our group project, we have to set up an event, choosing from a list of themes. Our group chose sustainability, making use of some facts about recycling and waste. Here are two poster concepts using a fact that I found. I bought a small toy double decker bus and took a quick photograph of it in the studio against a white background, leaving place for text. This is to draw attention to the startling statistic that the amount of waste paper buried each year could fill 103,448 double decker buses! (Apologies for the somewhat basic typeface: I'm working with Photoshop 7)

More Light Style Photographs

Light Photos

This time, the six photographs must have a similar composition, but focus more on light and how it affects the perception of the item/person. I chose a silver vase, as I think the shape and curves of the item allowed the lighting to bounce off and reflect in interesting ways.

Some Other Windows

Photos of a Similar Composition

Whoops! Just realised how long it's been since I last posted some work! Here are a series of photographs that had to have a similar composition, showing some form of link between them. I chose to use windows, showing a broad variety of sizes and shapes in and around Belfast City centre. I am quite happy with how these turned out, as my tutor for this module said he liked them.

Powerful Separate Connected Sequel

Here are Albert the Mannequin's alternative shots for powerful, separate and connected.

Power.Separate.Connected.Scary?

I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Local/Famous Illustrators

I was asked to research two artists that practice in my preffered area of VisCom, in my case, illustration. One example had to be well-known, and another local. For my famous example, I used Chris Riddell. He is an artist that primarily works on children's books, such as the award winning Lord of the Rings parody 'Muddle Earth.' He is also a political cartoonist, contributing to The Observer every week, with his own unique views on the latest politcal news.
For my local artist, I looked at the independent artist group 'Stray Design', who have mainly worked with local clients, such as a local noodle branch, creating a character for their brand, and Orange, by designing some bird characters to be used in their advertising campaigns. The company works with several different types of media, including hand-drawn, vector and digitally painted. Even though these two artists are very different in terms of their different 'fame' status, I like both of their work equally, from Riddell's scribbly, yet detailed artwork, to Stray's simplistic cartoon characters, they both have a certain appeal.
